JUNE IS NATIONAL CANDY MONTH
While we may celebrate candy all year long, June has the privilege of being the official National Candy Month. Chocolate and candy have always been a fun part of the summer months and many seasonal summer celebrations.
National Candy Month is a time to celebrate the authentic, fun treats that candy companies have been producing for more than one hundred (100) years. Started by the National Confectioner’s Association, the holiday celebrates the value candy adds to all of our lives.
And at Eat Sum More, we have all of your favorite South African candy treats for you to enjoy!
HAPPY CANADA DAY!
Canada Day is the national day of Canada which is celebrated on July 1st every year.
It is a federal statutory holiday that celebrates the anniversary of the Canadian Confederation. Popularly, Canada Day is known as ‘Canada’s Birthday’ and thus people celebrate Canada Day like a festival with great celebrations, drinking and lots of fun.
From all of us here at Eat Sum More, we would like to wish you and your family a very Happy Canada Day!
On May 13th, 1806, a New York tabloid published the first definition of a cocktail. The now historic, illustrative description appeared in The Balance and Columbian Repository, where the editor Harry Croswell replied to a reader who wrote in to ask what a cocktail was:
“A cocktail, then, is a stimulating liquor, composed of spirits of any kind, sugar, water and bitters.”
The reason that Harry Croswell’s definition is so important – and the reason we mark it with this day of recognition – is that it truly brought the word into the public eye, solidifying its existence in the world of booze and social drinking and laying the foundation for further inquiry, interest and everyday use.
VICTORIA DAY IN CANADA MEMORIAL DAY IN THE UNITED STATES
Victoria Day in Canada is Monday, May 23rd and Memorial Day in the US is one week later on Monday, May 30th.
Many North Americans celebrate their respective long weekends with barbecues and family get-togethers, but these holidays are so much more than a chance to kick off the summer months. At its heart, both of these holidays are days to solemnly honor all of the men and women who have died in military service.
The main purpose of Victoria Day and Memorial Day is to pay tribute and memorialize the veterans who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country.
From all of us here at Eat Sum More, we salute the men and women who lost their lives while serving in the military.
MAY IS NATIONAL BBQ & SALAD MONTH
The sun is shining, the breeze is warming, the birds are chirping, and grills all around Toronto are being lit up for the first barbecue of the season. And there is no better way to spend a beautiful Sunday afternoon in May than by throwing a barbecue for your friends and family to enjoy!
Yup, it’s time to take the covers off your grills and smokers and start cooking outside again. 😀
The select spices we use are directly related to the spice route that made its way around the Cape of Africa. My late father, Louis Slimowitz, had a number of butcheries in Klerksdorp and Stillfontein, and he always used to say again and again, “It’s all in the spices!”
We have worked hard and with relentless passion and integrity to raise the bar as we continue to provide you, our clients, with the freshest, sustainable, top-of-the-line, hand cut, traditional South African meat products that you’ve come to love over the years.
NOTE – We do not ship frozen meats; in-store pick-up only.
We are very pleased to announce that our store is now offering full in-person shopping going forward. There are no capacity limits either, so come one, come all!
Masks are mandatory and we do ask that you use the hand sanitizer station located at the front of the store when you first arrive.
We are truly excited to have you shop inside our store and pick up all of your essential South African foods, meats, soups, sauces, spices, desserts, beverages, and delicious treats & delicacies.
Thank you once again for all of your support and understanding over these unprecedented times. It certainly has been a challenge, but we have done our best to adapt. We hope you have been doing well and staying safe, and we are looking forward to seeing all of you in person real soon!
Welkom Terug! From the Eat Sum More Team: Tanya, Ira, Amber, Anthony, Andy, Kevin, and Darlene.

Passover (or Pesach in Hebrew), is a Jewish holiday commemorating the exodus of the Israelites from slavery. It’s a good time to acknowledge the significance of family and friends, and to express gratitude for your freedom. Steeped in tradition, the celebration of Passover heralds deliverance and blessings.
We hope you have a prosperous Passover surrounded by your loved ones. Happy Passover!

Earth Day will be celebrated by millions of Canadians across our country, as well as everyone around the world on Friday, April 22nd- marking this holiday as the 52nd anniversary of the very first Earth Day that was created way back in 1970.
The day is rejoiced around the world, by people from all walks of life who are concerned about making a sustainable future for their children. Events, parades, festivals and overall awareness campaigns mark the day, with the hope of preserving the environment for many generations to come.
The theme for Earth Day 2022 is “INVEST IN OUR PLANET”, focusing on the effects of climate change on the planet that we all share – and what efforts are being made in the real world to mitigate it.
“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtfully committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.” — Margaret Mead
From all of us here at Eat Sum More, Happy Earth Day!
National Nutrition Month is an annual campaign created by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. During the month of March, everyone is invited to learn more about making informed food choices and developing healthful eating and physical activity habits.
It started as National Nutrition Week back in 1973. Interest and excitement grew and National Nutrition Month was inaugurated in 1980 throughout Canada.
This holiday stresses the importance of a balanced diet and exercise, and the transformative powers of healthy food choices. The Academy encourages using a registered dietitian in order to develop and stick with a healthy eating plan.
And please note that nutrition doesn’t end at what we eat – making exercise an integral part of our lives is also highly encouraged. This month gives us an opportunity to reflect inward and make tangible changes to our diets and/or workout regimens.
HAPPY ST. PATRICK’S DAY! MARCH 17
St. Patrick’s Day is a global celebration of what it means to be Irish; the spirit, the determination, the creativity and the indefinable qualities that make the Irish people who they are.
Once a year, in cities like Cape Town and Johannesburg, the streets are filled with South Africans and tourists wearing strange green clothing and drinking green beer – a sign that St Patrick’s Day has arrived.
Here in Canada, we celebrate the holiday by day drinking and partaking in the celebration of Irish culture with parades, special foods, music, dancing, and a whole lot of green.
In the spirit of the holiday, here is a list of some GREEN Eat Sum More delicacies that you and your family & friends can enjoy on March 17.
NATIONAL PUPPY DAY MARCH 23
Dogs are the most trusting, happy, joy-filled creatures on earth. On March 23rd we take time to stop and celebrate National Puppy Day. This holiday is celebrated every year in the hopes of improving the lives of puppies everywhere.
National Puppy Day seeks to celebrate the unconditional love that puppies bring to people’s lives. Puppies are young dogs. Depending on the breed, some can remain as puppies longer than others. This day aims to help save orphaned puppies across the globe by encouraging adoption.
The idea is to focus attention on puppies in need of adoption, and on the abuses found in puppy mills, but also to celebrate these furry little companions. According to statistics, people who have one or more pets in their homes lead happier lives, are considerably healthier, and live longer than those who don’t.
March 29th is a holiday for all of the hard-working small business owners out there! The day exists to celebrate their business achievements, and the positivity they bring to your local communities.
We congratulate them for the hours of hard work they put into helping their business exist, grow, and thrive – and so on March 29th the entire nation recognizes their achievements.
Mom & Pop business owners spend countless hours nurturing and growing their young enterprises. The workload demands, and lack of a hired staff, often translates into long and late hours, and many missed family and personal events. But, all in all, they love what they do. After all, they are their own boss.
This holiday is an opportunity to celebrate the family-owned businesses that make Canadian communities diverse and vibrant. As small and independently owned businesses, Mom & Pop shops, restaurants, hotels, and other businesses represent the building blocks of their local economies. They create jobs, reinvest in their communities and support local initiatives.

Eat Sum More is proud to celebrate Black History Month, as we honour the contributions that Black people have made, and continue to make, in all sectors of our society, and all around our country.
This month is about celebrating resilience, innovation, and determination to work towards a more equitable, inclusive and diverse Canada – a Canada in which everyone has every opportunity to flourish.
It’s a celebration of those who’ve impacted our lives with their activism and achievements, and an opportunity for people to engage with Black histories, go beyond discussions of racism, and highlight Black leaders and their accomplishments.

LET’S MAKE IT A DRY JANUARY
After drinking all of the spiked eggnog you can stand and sipped the last of winter’s bubbly, you might be looking for a much needed break from alcohol. Enter Dry January – a time when many people choose to avoid booze for the whole month.
Recent studies show that during the coronavirus pandemic, Canadian adults drank alcohol 14% more frequently than they did before the pandemic.
Dry January appeals to those of you who may have noticed a pattern that you’re drinking a little bit more than you should, especially during the recent holiday season, and a month-long break could be the kick start you’re looking for to start off the New Year.
So, instead of reaching for a beer or a shot of whiskey during this month, here are some of our delicious (and non-alcoholic) South African beverages you could enjoy instead:
JANUARY 15TH IS NATIONAL BAGEL DAY
Observed annually on January 15th, National Bagel Day is a holiday which pays homage to the dense and chewy bread product that we all love, which dates back to the 16th century.
As carbohydrates go, the bagel is one of the most versatile and the most beloved. Chewy on the inside, crunchy on the outside, and bursting with every flavor under the sun.
At Eat Sum More, we offer a variety of spreads and shmears that you can put on top of your bagel as you celebrate this national holiday:

WE CARRY A WIDE SELECTION OF HALLOWE’EN
CANDIES & TREATS
Halloween, from the original name “All Hallows’ Eve”, is a yearly holiday observed around the world on October 31st. Modern Halloween traditions include the carving of jack-o’-lanterns and displaying scary imagery around your property, which welcomes the children of your neighbourhood to your home so that you can give out candies and treats to all of them wearing their adorable costumes.
Eat Sum More has a huge selection of candies and chocolates to compliment your Hallowe’en night, whether that be via safe trick-or-treating or for you to hand out at your friends & family gatherings with the people in your close social circle.
Baking season is here – and the most popular baked good is, of course, cookies! Did you know that the origin of the word cookie comes from the Dutch word for “little cakes”?
Known to many around the world as biscuits, biscottis, keks, hertzoggies or galletas, the cookie is one of the most, if not the most, popular desserts ever created. With National Cookie Month upon us, it’s only fitting to get into the spirit of things and embrace what makes cookies so magical.
From macaroons, to gingerbread, and shortbread, to chocolate chip, cookies are certainly one of Canada’s favorite treats. And why not? They’re delicious, they fill the room with wonderful and heavenly aromas, they take you back to a simpler time as a child, and there is a flavour fit for every tastebud. Whether you prefer your cookie to be soft and gooey, or crunchy and chocolatey, you can bet that the perfect cookie for you is out there.
WINTER SHOPPING GUIDELINES
We have been truly excited having you once again shop inside our store and pick up all of your essential South African foods, meats, soups, sauces, spices, desserts, beverages, and delicious treats & delicacies.
However, now that winter is quickly approaching – and bringing with it the mix of cold & snowy weather conditions – we would like to encourage our faithful clientele to continue to shop online (for delivery or curb-side pickups) whenever possible, so that you do not have to wait in line, outside in the cold!
Since we will only be allowing two (2) people from the same family / household OR one (1) solo person into the store premises at one time, in-person shopping waiting times could vary and we don’t want our clients to be uncomfortable having to wait outside during these upcoming winter months.
RECIPE OF THE MONTH
SOUTH AFRICAN SPICED THANKSGIVING TURKEY
DIRECTIONS:
Defrost the turkey: either put it in the fridge for two days; or if you’re short on time, place it, still in its packaging, in a sink full of cold water, refreshing water every half hour, for six hours.
Pat dry the turkey with paper towel.
Chop the onion and fry it until brown. Then blend all the ingredients above, along with the onion, into a paste.
Get dirty: rub the paste thoroughly under the skin of the turkey.
Stuff the cavity with a few onions, carrots, celery.
Add some flour to an oven bag and place turkey inside it. Scatter some celery, onions, and baby carrots into the bag. Let it marinate overnight.
Preheat oven to 400°F/200°C.
Cut slits in the bag.
Bake turkey in a deep pan, turning every hour.
After about 2.5 hours, remove bag.
Bake another two hours or until done (use a meat thermometer), turning it over once more, and constantly pouring juices over it.
Take it out of the oven and let it sit in a platter, before dressing with coriander.
We are currently offering contactless, curbside pick-up or home/office delivery. You can order online through our Website – https://eatsummore.com – and start enjoying our mouth-watering selection of South African products!
