EAT SUM MORE PAYS HOMAGE TO BLACK HISTORY MONTH

black history month

Black History Month is not just a North American holiday – South Africa also celebrates it in the month of February. Whereas in North America, we acknowledge Abraham Lincoln’s birthday, in South Africa it is held in February due to the release of Nelson Mandela after 27 years in prison (on February 11, 1990).

And even though it has only been a relatively short time since Nelson Mandela was freed, the younger generations living in Cape Town, Johannesburg & surrounding cities believe they are part of a “clean slate” in South Africa and will continue to work towards equal civil rights and freedoms for all people.

Black History Month is an opportunity for us to recognize and pay our homage to the past and present contributions of African Americans in areas such as education, medicine, art, culture, public service, economic development, politics and human rights.

BRRR… COLD WEATHER TIPS & TRICKS

family

Winter has hit Toronto full force – and temperatures this week hit a low of -25! Here are some cold weather tips & tricks for you to try:

  1. Always wear a hat made for cold weather when you step outside.
  2. Turn on the ceiling fan, which pushes warm air downwards.
  3. Switch between hot and cold in the shower to improve circulation.
  4. Block drafts under doorways with a pool noodle.
  5. Two words: programmable thermostat.
  6. To trick a locked thermostat that you don’t have access to, place some ice near it and it will perceive the room being colder than it actually is.
  7. Dress your windows up in warmer clothes. Replace thin curtains with heavier wool or fleece drapes.
  8. Go ahead, bake all day – using your oven heats up the whole house.
  9. Stuff your coat pockets (and gloves) with those ingenious little air-activated hand warmers.

Eat Sum More has a variety of comfort foods to keep you warm on these cold winter days & nights. We invite you to try one of our delicious South African soups; our delectable assortment of curries; our hot & nutritious cereals and porridges; or one of our many different SA sauces, spices and dressings to spruce up your meals.

Hallowe’en Will Be A Little Different This Year

halloween

Door to door trick-or-treating, indoor parties and haunted houses are among the riskiest Halloween activities when it comes to spreading the virus and we recommend you to avoid these altogether.

A safer alternative would be “one-way” trick-or-treating where individually wrapped goodie bags are lined up for kids/families to grab and go while continuing to social distance – such as at the end of your driveway or yard.

Eat Sum More has a huge selection of candies and chocolates to compliment your Hallowe’en night, whether that be via safe trick-or-treating as explained above or for you to hand out at your small, family gatherings with the people in your close social bubble.

Check out all of our Sweets & Chocolates here.

Movember For Men’s Health

men's health month

November 1st marks the beginning of moustache season!

Movember (as it is traditionally called) is the leading charity which is changing the face of men’s health on a global scale, focusing on men’s mental and physical health throughout the month of November.

The charity raises funds to deliver innovative, breakthrough research and support programs that enable men to live happier, healthier and longer lives.

The staff here at Eat Sum More is dedicated to keeping the men in our lives healthy, happy and strong! And for the men who want to be a little more adventurous with their taste buds, we have a line of South African Hot Sauces & Spices that will accentuate (and heat up!) any dish.

Try: Calisto’s Peri Peri Sauce (Hot and Extra Hot); Cartwright’s Curry Powder (Hot); Marina Braai Salt (Spicy); Miami Mango Atchar (Hot); Mrs. Balls Chutney (Chili Sauce); and our line of Rajah Curry Powders.

Daylight Savings – Fall Back One Hour

fall back one hour
The first Sunday in November is when Daylight Saving Time ends and we’ll “fall back” one hour and return to Standard Time on Sunday, November 1st at 2:00am. Be sure to set your clocks back one hour before bed on Halloween night!

And with that extra hour that we gain, what better way than to spend it enjoying more of your favorite South African late night snacks?

Remembrance Day; A Time To Honour Our Veterans

remembrance day

On November 11th at 11:00am – we observe a moment of silence to honour the courage, valour and sacrifice of the heroes who have served – and continue to serve – the great countries of Canada & South Africa during times of war and conflict.

On behalf of Eat Sum More, we thank you for your service!

Pap And Wors (South African Stew)

pap and wors

INGREDIENTS

4 cups of water
1 tsp salt
1 cup of Iwisa Maize Meal
500 grams Boerewors – cut into 3 inch pieces
1 can of All Gold Tomato & Onion Sauce (410 grams)

DIRECTIONS:
Bring the water and salt to the boil.

Add the Mielie Meal and stir with a wooden spoon until thickened.

Reduce the heat and simmer, stirring occasionally, for about 30 minutes or until the pap is thick, stiff, and cooked through.

BBQ Boerewors: Place boerewors on grill on indirect heat. Do not pierce. Let brown on a slow heat and slowly cook. Once cooked, you can cut into serving sizes (3 inch pieces). Heat the Onion and Tomato Sauce and use it as a gravy for the pap.

Fried Boerewors: Cut up boerewors into 3 inch pieces. Put a bit of water in the base of a frying pan, about ¼ cup, depending on how big your pan is, and put boerewors in. Let come to a boil with boerewors in. Let cook on a slow heat, so that the boerewors can cook, and the skin does not burst. Once the boerewors is almost cooked and the water dissolved, add the onion and tomato sauce, and let simmer until cooked. You can add a bit of garlic to add flavour.

Eet and geniet. Mmmm, dit is so lekker!
Eat and enjoy. Mmmm, it’s so nice!

Dear Eat Sum More Customers,

It has been a hard decision, but I have decided to close Eat Sum More to walk-in customers, due to the increasing Covid-19 numbers and the fact that winter is approaching. I need to protect my staff, as well as you – our loyal customers.

We are a small store, and as such, can only allow one customer inside at a time. Therefore I do not feel comfortable with having people wait outside, especially in the upcoming winter months where the weather will be very cold.

However, we have our online store which is still operational and running smoothly – you can peruse and purchase all of our merchandise and products in the comfort of your own home or workplace.

To place your order online, please visit: https://eatsummore.com

We will do curbside pick-up or delivery. And of course, our friendly service is always the same!

Thank you for understanding.

As always,

Tanya and Team at Eat Sum More.

NFL Football Season is Back

watch sports
For months, as COVID-19 ravaged the plans and schedules of other sports leagues around the world, the NFL insisted it would be able to start its 2020 season on time. And it has!

Of course, there have been some adjustments to get used to – sporadic or no fans in the stands, less crowded sidelines, a handful of missing players who chose to opt-out of the new season, and most notably – social justice will be highlighted throughout the games.

But football is football and we are very happy it is back!

So why not stock up on some of your favorite South African snacks to eat while you enjoy your Sunday watching some football. We have our famous Biltong, Chili Bites, Dry Wors, Bakers Salticrax, Ouma Rusks and Bakers Cream Crackers. A fab family treat – Flings!

October 1 is International Coffee Day

Koffiehuis Medium Roast Coffee
So, where did coffee come from and how did it become so popular?

According to legend, a sixth-century Ethiopian goatherd named Kaldi discovered his goats frolicking from one coffee shrub to another. He realized the coffee berries had a stimulating effect, and he began to experiment with the seeds. A century later, brewed coffee emerged in Arabia and the popularity of coffee grew at an exponential rate.

Here at Eat Sum More, we have a wide selection of South African coffees for your drinking pleasure – Koffiehuis Medium Roast Coffee, Frisco Original Coffee, Nestle Ricoffy. Not to forget our tea drinkers try our Rooibos Red Espresso.

School Snacks & Labour Day BBQ

Going Back to School: What To Snack On

Students all across Ontario will be heading back to school in the upcoming weeks ahead.

The government’s plan to reopen schools was approved by public health officials. This is a good thing according to pediatric specialists, who say that while the virus is dangerous, not going to school is dangerous, too – for education purposes as well as for children’s mental health.

Here is a great piece of advice from UNICEF:

“UNICEF is urging schools – whether open or helping students through remote learning – to provide students with holistic support. Schools should provide children with vital information on handwashing and other measures to protect themselves and their families; facilitate mental health support; and help to prevent stigma and discrimination by encouraging students to be kind to each other and avoid stereotypes when talking about the virus.”

Back to school means packing daily lunches for your kids once again! At Eat Sum More, we have a variety of delicious and nutritious snacks for your children’s lunch boxes:

Safari Kids Fruit Sticks
Peach and Apricot Rolls
Biltong
Dry Wors

All are very healthy and full of protein; have fewer calories than other snacks; great pick me up when your children need something to nibble on; stores well, and will not spoil in your child’s schoolbag or lunchbox; are all gluten free and chock full of vitamins.safari funky fruit sticksmontagu fruit roll apricotbiltongmeats
