Canada Day, formerly known as Dominion Day, is the national day of Canada. A federal statutory holiday, it celebrates the anniversary of Canadian Confederation which occurred on July 1, 1867, with the passing of the British North America Act, 1867, when the three separate colonies of the United Canadas, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick were united into a single dominion within the British Empire called Canada.
Originally called Dominion Day, the holiday was renamed in 1982, the same year that the Canadian constitution was patriated by the Canada Act, 1982, which severed the vestiges of legal dependence on the Parliament of the United Kingdom. Canada Day celebrations take place throughout the country, as well as in various locations around the world attended by Canadians living abroad.

National Nutrition Month is an annual campaign created by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. During the month of March, everyone is invited to learn more about making informed food choices and developing healthful eating and physical activity habits.
It started as National Nutrition Week back in 1973. Interest and excitement grew and National Nutrition Month was inaugurated in 1980 throughout Canada.
This holiday stresses the importance of a balanced diet and exercise, and the transformative powers of healthy food choices. The Academy encourages using a registered dietitian in order to develop and stick with a healthy eating plan.
And please note that nutrition doesn’t end at what we eat – making exercise an integral part of our lives is also highly encouraged. This month gives us an opportunity to reflect inward and make tangible changes to our diets and/or workout regimens.
NATIONAL PUPPY DAY IS ON MARCH 23RD
Dogs are the most trusting, happy, joy-filled creatures on earth. On March 23rd we take time to stop and celebrate National Puppy Day. This holiday is celebrated every year in the hopes of improving the lives of puppies everywhere.
National Puppy Day seeks to celebrate the unconditional love that puppies bring to people’s lives. Puppies are young dogs. Depending on the breed, some can remain as puppies longer than others. This day aims to help save orphaned puppies across the globe by encouraging adoption.
The idea is to focus attention on puppies in need of adoption, and on the abuses found in puppy mills, but also to celebrate these furry little companions. According to statistics, people who have one or more pets in their homes lead happier lives, are considerably healthier, and live longer than those who don’t.

This month is about celebrating resilience, innovation, and determination to work towards a more equitable, inclusive and diverse Canada – a Canada in which everyone has every opportunity to flourish.
It’s a celebration of those who’ve impacted our lives with their activism and achievements, and an opportunity for people to engage with Black histories, go beyond discussions of racism, and highlight Black leaders and their accomplishments.
EAT SUM MORE’S RICH HISTORY AND BACKSTORY
Our story begins with my late oupa and ouma George and Leah Slimowitz in Vanderbijlpark. They owned and operated a butchery called The Golden Highway Butchery – people used to come from miles away to stock-up on their meat for the month and in particular the Biltong, Droewors and Boerewors.
Going to the slaughterhouse early in the morning with my oupa, watching him select his choice of meat for the store, unbeknown to me at the time, would come in good standing in years to come. Back at the butchery my oupa used to mumble in Yiddish “It’s all in de spices” whilst making Biltong.
My late father, Louis Slimowitz had a number of butcheries in Klerksdorp and Stillfontein, and he also used to mutter, “It’s all in the spices”. Growing up in a farm environment in Ficksburg, I was always given the task of spicing the meats (which I hated) and I was the mutterer of “It’s all in the spices”.
Now at our 3rd generation Slimowitz family store in Thornhill, Ontario (headed up by the family matriarch, our mother Rita) we still mutter, “It’s all in the spices”.
We import all of our spices from South Africa and blend them in the store to produce the finest Biltong, Drywors, Chili Bites, Shavings and Boerewors, which people still travel for miles to acquire.
From all of us here at Eat Sum More, we would like to wish you and your family a very Happy New Year!
Here’s to a happy, healthy, successful and prosperous 2025! 😊
FUN FACT: DID YOU KNOW THAT SOUTH AFRICA IS THE LEADING PRODUCER OF MACADAMIA NUTS?
South Africa’s diverse climatic conditions are perfectly suited to the production of most nuts, including groundnuts (like peanuts) and tree nuts (like almonds and cashews).
However, macadamia nuts are the #1 predominant tree nut crops grown in the country.
The South African Macadamia Growers’ Association (SAMAC) estimates that there are over 700 producers in the country. South Africa also boosts the single largest commercial planting in the world.
The global trend towards eating healthier food has seen tree nut production worldwide increase year-after-year for the last decade. Data from the International Nut and Dried Fruit Council (INC) revealed that South Africa was the leading global producer of macadamia nuts in 2024, accounting for 29% of world production.
Macadamia nuts were already established in the Durban Botanical Gardens in South Africa in 1915. Commercial production was established in the 1960s with production increasing so much over the years that South Africa has now become the largest producer of macadamia nuts worldwide!

Our biltong chili bites, also known as peri-peri biltong stokkies, are great to have around the house and/or the office for when you are craving a quick snack. And the convenient re-sealable packaging also makes them great for when you are on the go, watching a live sporting event or even at the movies.
Eat Sum More chili bites are made of thin strips of our premium grade, biltong beef and marinated in imported South African biltong spice. We carefully select each piece of lean topside beef joints which are of the highest quality. The pieces are then left to marinade in order to absorb all the spices. The beef strips are then slowly air dried to perfection and then are cut into thin chili bite strips.
Watch out, however as they are quite addictive! 😝
Added bonus – our South African biltong chili bites are Ketogenic & Paleo friendly.
Come visit us at our store in Thornhill, Ontario (just North of Toronto) or order online to get your hands on these premium delicacies.

WE SELL ONLY THE FINEST SOUTH AFRICAN CURRY PRODUCTS ON THE MARKET
Whether it includes a layer of grilled ripe bananas, box spices, or six tablespoons of sugar, curry in all its iterations is as close as South Africa comes to a national dish. When you talk about the cuisine of South Africa, a culturally and ethnically diverse country with no less than 11 official languages, curry comes up in the first breath.
On South Africa’s palm tree-lined east coast, within the humid port city of Durban, a unique style of Indian cuisine has evolved over the course of 158 years. Locals say you can’t leave before you try one of the Durban curries: smouldering hot mutton curry studded with potato chunks called “gravy soakers,”; fiery fish curry spiked with black tamarind and curry leaves; or bunny chow, a hollowed-out quarter-loaf of white bread filled with curry.
If you are looking to recreate some of these famous SA National dishes, or any of your own delicious creations, check out the plethora of curry products that we carry in our online store to help you achieve that goal.

The weather here in Toronto (and most of North America) is starting to get chilly… So what better way to keep warm than with some delicious Ouma Rusks, dipped into your favorite Rooibos Tea!
Ouma is a South African rusk made from a traditional buttermilk recipe. It was first produced in the rural town of Molteno, in the Eastern Cape, by Elizabeth Ann Greyvenstyn in 1939, in response to an initiative by the town’s pastor to help the entrepreneurial efforts of the women in his congregation.
Freshpal Rooibos grows in the clean mountain air on the slopes of the Cederberg mountains in the Western Cape. The bushes, once harvested, are dried by the African sun to create a tea distinguished by its rich russet colour, bright clarity, its warm aromatic fragrance and full, brisk, natural flavour.

Baking season is here – and the most popular baked good is, of course, cookies! Did you know that the origin of the word cookie comes from the Dutch word for “little cakes”?

From macaroons, to gingerbread, and shortbread, to chocolate chip, cookies are certainly one of Canada’s favorite treats. They’re delicious, they fill the room with wonderful and heavenly aromas, they take you back to a simpler time as a child, and there is a flavour fit for every tastebud.
There are many methods to celebrate National Cookie month, but the best way is to share a South African cookie with a friend or a loved one.
