FUN FACT ABOUT SOUTH AFRICA’S ANIMAL KINGDOM
South Africa’s lion, wildebeest, cheetah and springbok, are four of the seven fastest mammals on the entire planet!
And the springbok is actually the national animal of South Africa. Springboks are very common in rural areas and on many farms located across this great nation. There is even a town named after this animal, which is the largest town in the Namaqualand area in the Northern Cape province of South Africa. It was called Springbokfontein until 1911, and was then shortened to Springbok.
VICTORIA DAY IN CANADA – MEMORIAL DAY IN THE UNITED STATES
Victoria Day in Canada is Monday, May 22nd and Memorial Day in the US is one week later on Monday, May 29th.
Many North Americans celebrate their respective long weekends with barbecues and family get-togethers, but these holidays are so much more than a chance to kick off the summer months. At its heart, both of these holidays are days to solemnly honor all of the men and women who have died in military service.
The main purpose of Victoria Day and Memorial Day is to pay tribute and memorialize the veterans who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country.
From all of us here at Eat Sum More, we salute the men and women who lost their lives while serving in the military.
Rooibos Tea, also known as red tea or redbush tea, is naturally caffeine-free. It is made using leaves from a shrub called Aspalathus linearis, which are grown on the western coast of South Africa, in Cederberg, Western Cape.
Rooibos tea is gaining popularity as a delicious and healthy beverage. Consumed in Southern Africa for centuries, it has now become a beloved drink around the world. It’s a flavorful, caffeine-free alternative to black and green tea.
What’s more, advocates praise Rooibos for its potential health benefits, claiming that its antioxidants can protect against cancer, heart disease and stroke.
Here are the top five benefits of drinking Rooibos Tea:
Low in Tannins, Free from Caffeine, No Oxalic Acid
Packed With Antioxidants
Helps Boost Heart Health
Reduces Cancer Risk
May Benefit People with Type 2 Diabetes
Eat Sum More carries multiple Rooibos Teas – like 100% Natural Rooibos Red Espresso and Freshpak Rooibos Tea.
Freedom Day is a public holiday in South Africa celebrated on April 27th. It is an annual celebration of South Africa’s first non-racial democratic elections of 1994. It is significant because it marks the end of over three hundred years of colonialism, segregation and white minority rule and the establishment of a new democratic government led by Nelson Mandela and a new state subject to a new constitution.
Freedom Day is a special day for all South Africans to reflect on the painful struggles we’ve overcome as a country, as well as to honour the students, teachers, political leaders and everyday people who lost their lives in the fight for a democratic South Africa.
Freedom Day affords South Africans the opportunity to make a pledge towards fighting against the legacy of racism and economic inequality as well as renewing their loyalty to their country and their commitment to its future. Celebrating Freedom Day in South Africa is all about commemorating the country’s history and the start of democracy.
TRY OUR AMAZING BILTONG CHILI BITES – BUT WATCH OUT, THEY ARE ADDICTIVE!
Our biltong chili bites, also known as peri-peri biltong stokkies, are great to have around the house and/or the office for when you are craving a quick snack. And the convenient re-sealable packaging also makes them great for when you are on the go, watching a live sporting event or even at the movies.
Eat Sum More chili bites are made of thin strips of our premium grade, biltong beef and marinated in imported South African biltong spice. We carefully select each piece of lean topside beef joints which are of the highest quality. The pieces are then left to marinade in order to absorb all the spices. The beef strips are then slowly air dried to perfection and then are cut into thin chili bite strips.
Watch out, however as they are quite addictive!
Added bonus – our South African biltong chili bites are ketogenic & paleo friendly.

SOUTH AFRICAN SPORTS TRIVIA
Did you know that South Africa was the very first country in the entire world to have played host to the rugby, soccer, and cricket World Cups?
Sport in South Africa has a significant role in South African culture. The three most popular mainstream sports in the country – rugby, soccer and cricket – reflect its early British colonial influence. Other popular sports include basketball, boxing, golf, netball, swimming, and tennis.
One thing is for sure – South Africans are extremely passionate about sports!

VALENTINE’S DAY SOUTH AFRICAN SWEETS FOR YOUR SPECIAL SWEETHEART
Tomorrow is Valentine’s Day – and whether you’re in a new relationship or have been dating for a while, or just want to tell someone that you think they are special, chances are you are looking for that certain wonderful something to give to them on the 14th of February.
South Africans usually give their kêrel (boyfriend) or vriendin (girlfriend) a thoughtful gift – often of the chocolate variety. Many couples will give a Valentyne Kaartjie (Valentine’s card) to accompany the chocolates, to express their great affection. The card will often have no signature and the recipient then has to guess who gave the card and gift.
So go on and give a gift of love – Eat Sum More has something for that special someone in your life:
VALENTINE’S DAY SOUTH AFRICAN SWEETS FOR YOUR SPECIAL SWEETHEART
Black History Month is not just a North American holiday – South Africa also celebrates it in the month of February. Whereas in North America, we acknowledge Abraham Lincoln’s birthday, in South Africa it is held in February due to the release of Nelson Mandela after 27 years in prison (on February 11, 1990).
And even though it has only been a relatively short time since Nelson Mandela was freed, the younger generations living in Cape Town, Johannesburg & surrounding cities believe they are part of a “clean slate” in South Africa and will continue to work towards equal civil rights and freedoms for all people.
Black History Month is an opportunity for us to recognize and pay our homage and respect to the past and present contributions of African Americans in areas such as education, medicine, art, culture, public service, economic development, politics and human rights.

Macadamia nuts were already established in the Durban Botanical Gardens in South Africa in 1915. Commercial production was established in the 1960s with production increasing so much over the years that South Africa has now become the largest producer of macadamia nuts worldwide!

FOUR (4) FACTS ABOUT OUR SOUTH AFRICAN CANNED FRUITS & VEGGIES
All of our canned fruits and vegetables contain approximately the same amount of nutrients as fresh and frozen produce. Actually, there are some canned foods that actually contain more vitamins and minerals than the fresh options.
Our South African canned fruits and vegetables have a longer shelf life; are ready to eat; and easy to use when preparing meals.
All of our store’s canned fruits and vegetables are safe. The canning process we incorporate uses high levels of heat to preserve the food which prevents the growth of pathogens.
We carry a variety of canned fruits and vegetables that are usually lower in price than the traditional supermarkets, which allows families to stretch out their food dollars.

WE CARRY A WIDE SELECTION OF HALLOWE’EN CANDIES & TREATS
Halloween, from the original name “All Hallows’ Eve”, is a yearly holiday observed around the world on October 31st. Modern Halloween traditions include the carving of jack-o’-lanterns and displaying scary imagery around your property, which welcomes the children of your neighbourhood to your home so that you can give out candies and treats to all of them wearing their adorable costumes.
Eat Sum More has a huge selection of candies and chocolates to compliment your Hallowe’en night, whether that be via safe trick-or-treating or for you to hand out at your friends & family gatherings with the people in your close social circle.
Baking season is here – and the most popular baked good is, of course, cookies! Did you know that the origin of the word cookie comes from the Dutch word for “little cakes”?
Known to many around the world as biscuits, biscottis, keks, hertzoggies or galletas, the cookie is one of the most, if not the most, popular desserts ever created. With National Cookie Month upon us, it’s only fitting to get into the spirit of things and embrace what makes cookies so magical.
From macaroons, to gingerbread, and shortbread, to chocolate chip, cookies are certainly one of Canada’s favorite treats. And why not? They’re delicious, they fill the room with wonderful and heavenly aromas, they take you back to a simpler time as a child, and there is a flavour fit for every tastebud. Whether you prefer your cookie to be soft and gooey, or crunchy and chocolatey, you can bet that the perfect cookie for you is out there.
There are many methods to celebrate National Cookie month, but the best way is to share a South African cookie treat with a friend or a loved one.
And you can find all of our delicious South African cookies & biscuits in our Online Store, ready to be shipped right to your door.
We have one question for you – are you ready for some footballllll?

NATIONAL COFFEE DAY IN NORTH AMERICA
Thursday, September 29th is National Coffee Day.
So, where did coffee come from and how did it become so popular?
According to legend, a sixth-century Ethiopian goatherd named Kaldi discovered his goats frolicking from one coffee shrub to another. He realized the coffee berries had a stimulating effect, and he began to experiment with the seeds. A century later, brewed coffee emerged in Arabia and the popularity of coffee grew at an exponential rate.
