COME TRY OUR MOUTH WATERING SOUTH AFRICAN FLATTENED CHICKEN
Our South African roast flattened chicken is lovingly made from our ancient family recipe which has been passed down for generations & generations
The intricate and select spices we use are directly correlated to the “Spice Route” that made its way around the Cape of Africa in the 15th century. My late father, Louis Slimowitz, had a number of butcheries in Klerksdorp and Stillfontein, and he always used to say again and again, “It’s all in the spices!”
Our flattened chicken is a traditional South African dish that is great for a family supper or your next dinner party. Pair it with your favorite salads, french fries and/or choice of rice.
Geniet dit!
NOTE: IN STORE PICK-UP ONLY. TO PRE-ORDER OUR FLATTENED CHICKEN, CLICK HERE.

It’s a celebration of those who’ve impacted our lives with their activism and achievements, and an opportunity for people to engage with Black histories, go beyond discussions of racism, and highlight Black leaders and their accomplishments.

LET’S MAKE IT A DRY JANUARY!
After drinking all of the spiked eggnog you can stand and sipped the last of the New Year’s Eve bubbly, you might be looking for a much needed break from alcohol.
Enter Dry January – a time when many people choose to avoid booze for the whole month in order to reset the body into homeostasis.
Dry January appeals to those of you who may have noticed a pattern that you’re drinking a little bit more than you should, especially during the recent holiday season, and a month-long break could be the kick start you’re looking for to start off the New Year right.
So, instead of reaching for a beer or a shot of whiskey during this month, here are some of our delicious (and non-alcoholic) South African beverages you could enjoy instead:
THE HISTORY OF MRS. H.S. BALL’S CHUTNEY SAUCES
Here is the story of how Mrs. Ball’s Chutney sauces came to be:
“Few lovers of the saucy Mrs. H.S. Ball’s Chutney will know that our recipe survived a shipwreck! In 1852, the SS Quanza was shipwrecked off East London, South Africa, en route from Canada to Australia. It was Captain Adkins and his wife who saved a blueprint for what was to become one of SA’s most unique and priceless culinary icons.
This secret recipe was passed on to their daughter, Amelia, in 1865, who later married Mr. Herbert Sandleton Ball. During 1914, demand for the wholesome, piquant and fruity flavour grew bigger and bigger. And soon the Ball kitchen was transformed into a makeshift production line. Mrs H.S. Ball’s Chutney was home, and ready to tickle the taste buds of chutney lovers across the globe.
A family name and soon to be the most loved chutney in South Africa, Mrs H.S. Ball’s Chutney was created with the Ball family crest on the top of the label. The Woodstock factory opened in 1917 to meet escalating demand, and our most-loved bottle started to travel around the world.”
Eat Sum More carries a wide variety of Mrs. Ball’s Chutney Sauces – and you can find them / buy them all in our Online Store:
FOUR (4) FUN FACTS ABOUT OUR SOUTH AFRICAN CANNED FRUITS & VEGGIES
All of our canned fruits and vegetables contain approximately the same amount of nutrients as fresh and frozen produce. Actually, there are some canned foods that actually contain more vitamins and minerals than the fresh options.
Our South African canned fruits and vegetables have a longer shelf life; are ready to eat; and easy to use when preparing meals.
All of our store’s canned fruits and vegetables are safe. The canning process we incorporate uses high levels of heat to preserve the food which prevents the growth of pathogens.
We carry a variety of canned fruits and vegetables that are usually lower in price than the traditional supermarkets, which allows families to stretch out their food dollars.
AN AMAZING VIDEO FROM ROXANE HAYWARD FAMOUS SOUTH AFRICAN ACTRESS
The amazing Roxane Hayward – a South African actress who has appeared in such TV shows as Leonardo, Dominion and Saints & Strangers – is seen in the below video unboxing an Eat Sum More bundle of goodies, which reminds her of back home.
We can’t thank her enough for this celebrity endorsement and are so happy that we could put a smile on her face during the holidays.
TRY OUR AMAZING BILTONG CHILI BITES – BUT WATCH OUT, THEY ARE ADDICTIVE!
Our biltong chili bites, also known as peri-peri biltong stokkies, are great to have around the house and/or the office for when you are craving a quick snack. And the convenient re-sealable packaging also makes them great for when you are on the go, watching a live sporting event or even at the movies.
Eat Sum More chili bites are made of thin strips of our premium grade, biltong beef and marinated in imported South African biltong spice. We carefully select each piece of lean topside beef joints which are of the highest quality. The pieces are then left to marinade in order to absorb all the spices. The beef strips are then slowly air dried to perfection and then are cut into thin chili bite strips.
Watch out, however as they are quite addictive!
Added bonus – our South African biltong chili bites are Ketogenic & Paleo friendly.
Come visit us at our store in Thornhill, Ontario (just North of Toronto) or order online to get your hands on these premium delicacies.

CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR SOUTH AFRICAN RUGBY TEAM!
South Africa produced a magnificent defensive display to edge 14-man New Zealand 12-11 in a compelling arm-wrestle of a Rugby World Cup final and win the Webb Ellis Cup for a record fourth time.
The Springboks, led by man of the match Pieter-Steph du Toit, managed to hold firm under huge pressure over the final quarter and Handre Pollard’s four first-half penalties proved sufficient to add another title to those of 1995, 2007 and 2019. Chants of “ibuyile” (“It has returned”) rang out after the successful retention of the trophy and a record fourth victory in the competition.
South Africa had by far the hardest route to the final of facing the other five of the top six teams in the world rankings (Ireland, New Zealand, France, England and Scotland) losing narrowly to Ireland in the pool stage. And they won it the hard way showing supreme courage and determination to win all their three knock-out games by a single point.
Extraordinary victory!
HAPPY THANKSGIVING TO OUR NEIGHBOURS TO THE SOUTH!
From all of us here at Eat Sum More, we would like to wish our American clients, friends & colleagues a very Happy Thanksgiving Holiday to you and your families!
We gather together every Thursday, November 25th to be thankful for what we have, for the family we love, the friends we cherish, and for the blessings that will come!
SPRINGBOKS RUGBY TEAM IS GOING FOR BACK-TO-BACK CHAMPIONSHIPS!
The Stade de France in Paris will play host to what will be the greatest Rugby World Cup Final since the tournament’s inception – as the All Blacks and Springboks battle it out for the William Webb Ellis Cup. South Africa and New Zealand will do battle in the final match, where one of them will win a record fourth Championship for their country.
The Springboks pulled off a narrow victory and beat England 16-15 and kept their title defense of the Rugby World Cup alive, setting up a blockbuster finale against the All Blacks.
This is the first time since South Africa’s first appearance at the tournament, when they hosted in 1995, that these two great rugby nations clashed in the tournament’s showpiece event, and now, 28 years later, the two sides meet once again to battle it out for rugby’s most prized trophy.
Kom ons gaan Springbokke! Bring nog ‘n kampioenskap huis toe!

So, where did coffee come from and how did it become so popular?
According to legend, a sixth-century Ethiopian goatherd named Kaldi discovered his goats frolicking from one coffee shrub to another. He realized the coffee berries had a stimulating effect, and he began to experiment with the seeds. A century later, brewed coffee emerged in Arabia and the popularity of coffee grew at an exponential rate.

AUGUST 9TH WAS NATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY IN SOUTH AFRICA!
In 1956, around 20,000 women of all races and religions stood together in a peaceful protest – and marched to the Union Building in Pretoria to take a stand for change.
The public holiday, marked every year on August 9th in South Africa, commemorates this historic protest of unjust laws under the then-apartheid regime.
Though there is still much that needs to be worked on for the women of South Africa (and all countries around the world), that was the day that change started for good.
We can accomplish so much when we work together and stand up for what’s right. Women have had a long history of oppression, but every fight gets one step closer to freedom and equality.
We hope you had a wonderful Happy Women’s Day to all you South African queens out there!
AUGUST 21ST IS SENIOR CITIZENS DAY!
Do you have an elderly person in your life that you love and appreciate very much? National Senior Citizens Day this year is August 21st – and this is the day to let them know how much you care and it’s an opportunity to recognize their many accomplishments. It is a time for the younger generation to share in the wisdom and experiences that our older generation of people have to offer.
Today, seniors are still active in their communities as well as continuing to have a strong presence in the workforce. For all they do and have achieved for the good of their communities, senior citizens deserve our thanks!
Are you interested in making some Malva pudding? How about some Hertzoggie slices? Or some delicious Koeksisters? Or a nice traditional Peppermint Crisp?
A melting pot of the Dutch, British and African traditions, the baking culture of South Africa embraces flavorful cuisine in which traditional desserts play an important role. South Africans love it sweet – be it a veggie dish or a barbecue sauce on meat, let alone delicious pastries, cakes & pies.

Youth Day in South Africa is a day to honour the courage and sacrifice of the Soweto Uprising youth and celebrate all young people. Previously known as Soweto Day, Youth Day marks the start of the Soweto riots on this day in 1976.
The June 16th, 1976 Uprising that began in Soweto and spread countrywide profoundly changed the socio-political landscape in South Africa. Events that triggered the uprising can be traced back to policies of the Apartheid government that resulted in the introduction of the Bantu Education Act in 1953.
The aftermath of these events had dire consequences for the Apartheid government. Images of the police firing on peacefully demonstrating students led an international revulsion against South Africa as its brutality was exposed. Meanwhile, the weakened and exiled liberation movements received new recruits fleeing political persecution at home giving impetus to the struggle against Apartheid.
Twelve-year-old Hector Pieterson was among those shot. A photograph of the wounded child was printed in newspapers throughout the world. It became a symbol of the uprising against apartheid.
Youth Day commemorates these events by giving school children all over South Africa the day off.
JUNE IS NATIONAL CANDY MONTH

FUN FACT ABOUT SOUTH AFRICA’S ANIMAL KINGDOM
South Africa’s lion, wildebeest, cheetah and springbok, are four of the seven fastest mammals on the entire planet!
And the springbok is actually the national animal of South Africa. Springboks are very common in rural areas and on many farms located across this great nation. There is even a town named after this animal, which is the largest town in the Namaqualand area in the Northern Cape province of South Africa. It was called Springbokfontein until 1911, and was then shortened to Springbok.
VICTORIA DAY IN CANADA – MEMORIAL DAY IN THE UNITED STATES
Victoria Day in Canada is Monday, May 22nd and Memorial Day in the US is one week later on Monday, May 29th.
Many North Americans celebrate their respective long weekends with barbecues and family get-togethers, but these holidays are so much more than a chance to kick off the summer months. At its heart, both of these holidays are days to solemnly honor all of the men and women who have died in military service.
The main purpose of Victoria Day and Memorial Day is to pay tribute and memorialize the veterans who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country.
From all of us here at Eat Sum More, we salute the men and women who lost their lives while serving in the military.

Freedom Day is a public holiday in South Africa celebrated on April 27th. It is an annual celebration of South Africa’s first non-racial democratic elections of 1994. It is significant because it marks the end of over three hundred years of colonialism, segregation and white minority rule and the establishment of a new democratic government led by Nelson Mandela and a new state subject to a new constitution.
Freedom Day is a special day for all South Africans to reflect on the painful struggles we’ve overcome as a country, as well as to honour the students, teachers, political leaders and everyday people who lost their lives in the fight for a democratic South Africa.
Freedom Day affords South Africans the opportunity to make a pledge towards fighting against the legacy of racism and economic inequality as well as renewing their loyalty to their country and their commitment to its future. Celebrating Freedom Day in South Africa is all about commemorating the country’s history and the start of democracy.
