LET’S MAKE IT A DRY JANUARY
After drinking all of the spiked eggnog you can stand and sipped the last of winter’s bubbly, you might be looking for a much needed break from alcohol. Enter Dry January – a time when many people choose to avoid booze for the whole month.
Recent studies show that during the coronavirus pandemic, Canadian adults drank alcohol 14% more frequently than they did before the pandemic.
Dry January appeals to those of you who may have noticed a pattern that you’re drinking a little bit more than you should, especially during the recent holiday season, and a month-long break could be the kick start you’re looking for to start off the New Year.
So, instead of reaching for a beer or a shot of whiskey during this month, here are some of our delicious (and non-alcoholic) South African beverages you could enjoy instead:
JANUARY 15TH IS NATIONAL BAGEL DAY
Observed annually on January 15th, National Bagel Day is a holiday which pays homage to the dense and chewy bread product that we all love, which dates back to the 16th century.
As carbohydrates go, the bagel is one of the most versatile and the most beloved. Chewy on the inside, crunchy on the outside, and bursting with every flavor under the sun.
At Eat Sum More, we offer a variety of spreads and shmears that you can put on top of your bagel as you celebrate this national holiday:

CANDIES & TREATS
Halloween, from the original name “All Hallows’ Eve”, is a yearly holiday observed around the world on October 31st. Modern Halloween traditions include the carving of jack-o’-lanterns and displaying scary imagery around your property, which welcomes the children of your neighbourhood to your home so that you can give out candies and treats to all of them wearing their adorable costumes.
Eat Sum More has a huge selection of candies and chocolates to compliment your Hallowe’en night, whether that be via safe trick-or-treating or for you to hand out at your friends & family gatherings with the people in your close social circle.

OCTOBER IS NATIONAL COOKIE MONTH
Baking season is here – and the most popular baked good is, of course, cookies! Did you know that the origin of the word cookie comes from the Dutch word for “little cakes”?
Known to many around the world as biscuits, biscottis, keks, hertzoggies or galletas, the cookie is one of the most, if not the most, popular desserts ever created. With National Cookie Month upon us, it’s only fitting to get into the spirit of things and embrace what makes cookies so magical.
From macaroons, to gingerbread, and shortbread, to chocolate chip, cookies are certainly one of Canada’s favorite treats. And why not? They’re delicious, they fill the room with wonderful and heavenly aromas, they take you back to a simpler time as a child, and there is a flavour fit for every tastebud. Whether you prefer your cookie to be soft and gooey, or crunchy and chocolatey, you can bet that the perfect cookie for you is out there.
WINTER SHOPPING GUIDELINES
We have been truly excited having you once again shop inside our store and pick up all of your essential South African foods, meats, soups, sauces, spices, desserts, beverages, and delicious treats & delicacies.
However, now that winter is quickly approaching – and bringing with it the mix of cold & snowy weather conditions – we would like to encourage our faithful clientele to continue to shop online (for delivery or curb-side pickups) whenever possible, so that you do not have to wait in line, outside in the cold!
Since we will only be allowing two (2) people from the same family / household OR one (1) solo person into the store premises at one time, in-person shopping waiting times could vary and we don’t want our clients to be uncomfortable having to wait outside during these upcoming winter months.

RECIPE OF THE MONTH
SOUTH AFRICAN SPICED THANKSGIVING TURKEY
INGREDIENTS:
- 4.5kg/10lb turkey
- 1 large washed onion
- 4 tsp ginger paste
- 3 tsp garlic paste
- 1/2 stick butter
- 10 small washed fresh green chillies
- 1 cup washed fresh green coriander leaves
- 3 tbsp lemon juice
- 2 tbsp coriander powder
- 1 tbsp cumin powder
- 1.5 tbsp garam masala
- 1tbsp red chilli powder
- 2 tbsp cooking oil (canola)
- Salt to taste
DIRECTIONS:
Defrost the turkey: either put it in the fridge for two days; or if you’re short on time, place it, still in its packaging, in a sink full of cold water, refreshing water every half hour, for six hours.
Pat dry the turkey with paper towel.
Chop the onion and fry it until brown. Then blend all the ingredients above, along with the onion, into a paste.
Get dirty: rub the paste thoroughly under the skin of the turkey.
Stuff the cavity with a few onions, carrots, celery.
Add some flour to an oven bag and place turkey inside it. Scatter some celery, onions, and baby carrots into the bag. Let it marinate overnight.
Preheat oven to 400°F/200°C.
Cut slits in the bag.
Bake turkey in a deep pan, turning every hour.
After about 2.5 hours, remove bag.
Bake another two hours or until done (use a meat thermometer), turning it over once more, and constantly pouring juices over it.
Take it out of the oven and let it sit in a platter, before dressing with coriander.

RECIPE OF THE MONTH

This is a time-honoured South African recipe, which comes from the great culinary tradition of the Cape Malays way back in the 17th century. It’s easy to make, and is deliciously paired with meats like venison, corned beef, traditional Bobotie or really, any preferred meat and gravy.
INGREDIENTS:
DIRECTIONS:
In a saucepan, combine the rice, salt, curry powder, sugar, cinnamon, raisins, butter and water. Bring to a boil uncovered. When it comes to a boil, reduce the heat to low, cover and let it simmer for 20 to 30 minutes, or until rice is fluffy and water has been absorbed. Remove from the heat and fluff with a fork. Keep warm until serving time.

BACK TO SCHOOL LUNCH & SNACK IDEAS
Students all across Ontario will be heading back to school towards the end of August.
The government’s plan to reopen a number of schools was approved by public health officials given the decline in COVID-19 cases over the summer. This is a good thing according to pediatric specialists, who say that while the virus is dangerous, not going to school is dangerous, too – for educational purposes, as well as for children’s mental health reasons.
Back to school means packing daily lunches and snacks for your kids once again. And at Eat Sum More, we have a variety of delicious and nutritious foods for your children’s lunch boxes:
– Montagu Peach Rolls
– Montagu Ginger Slices
– Safari Fruit Rolls
– Alman Dried Mango
– Provita Biscuits
– Biltong & Chili Bites
– Dry Wors
All of the above mentioned snacks: are very healthy and full of protein; have fewer calories than other sugary snacks; perfect munchies when your children need something to nibble on during their day; stores well / long time and will not spoil in your child’s schoolbag or lunchbox; are all gluten free and chock full of vitamins.

YESTERDAY WAS NELSON MANDELA
INTERNATIONAL DAY
We celebrate Nelson Mandela International Day every year to shine light on the legacy of a man who changed the 20th century and helped shape the 21st.
This is a moment for all of us to renew with the values that inspired Nelson Mandela. Absolute determination. A deep commitment to justice, human rights and fundamental freedoms. A profound belief in the equality and dignity of every woman and man. A relentless engagement for dialogue and solidarity across all lines and divisions.
Nelson Mandela was a great statesman, a fierce advocate for equality, and the founding father of peace in South Africa.
Nelson Mandela remains a symbol of power by resisting oppression. In times of turbulence, Mandela’s legacy teaches everyone to choose dignity over humiliation, speak up during injustice, and forgive rather than hate. He once said, “To be free is not merely to cast off one’s chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others.”

FATHER’S DAY DINNER – SOUTH AFRICAN STYLE!

Father’s Day falls on Sunday, June 20th, and although most sons and daughters don’t need a specific date to celebrate the most important man in their life, every Dad in the country does get his special day on the calendar. With restrictions lifting in many provinces and states, it looks like you will be able to meet in person this year and celebrate together!
Father’s Day celebrates and honors the men who have embraced the essential role of fatherhood. On this day, we also thank fathers and father figures for the sacrifies they make, for embracing the responsibility of nurturing and raising children, and for devotion to their family.
If your Dad is like most of our Dads, he has given himself the title of “grill master,” and you’ve probably seen him grill, smoke and slather his secret South African barbecue sauces and spices on just about anything.
Eat Sum More has a very special South African recipe that he could use this weekend to showcase his BBQ talents to create a traditional SA dish that the whole family will enjoy!
Please see below for an assortment of special sauces and accoutrements that can be used by Dad this holiday, as well as our famous recipe for Gourmet Boerewors Rolls:

IT’S MOTHER’S DAY WEEKEND

This Sunday will be the opportunity for people to thank Mothers and Mother figures who took the time to care for them and help them through life’s challenges. Especially this past year! It is a day meant to honour our Moms and appreciate their position in society and their role in our families.
Mother’s Day, much like last year, may look different than normal. Whether you are seeing your Mom in person or socially distancing due to the pandemic, the special occasion doesn’t need to involve huge crowds. Here are some great ideas for activities that you can do together:
Gardening together – Virtual spa day – Personalized video message – Movie date – Virtual fitness class or outdoor workout – Home brunch date – Matching meal kits and cook together
FUN FACT – Did you know that more phone calls are made on Mother’s Day than any other day of the entire year?
And if you are seeing your Mom in person this weekend, please see below for a delicious and mouth watering South African Cake Recipe that is easy to make and will make Mom real happy!
VICTORIA DAY IN CANADA; MEMORIAL DAY IN THE UNITED STATES
Victoria Day in Canada is Monday, May 24th and Memorial Day in the US is one week later on Monday, May 30th.
Many North Americans celebrate their respective long weekends with barbecues and family get-togethers; but, these holidays are so much more than a chance to kick off the summer months. At its heart, both of these holidays are days to solemnly honor all of the men and women who have died in military service.
The main purpose of Victoria Day and Memorial Day is to pay tribute and memorialize the veterans who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country.
From all of us here at Eat Sum More, we salute the men and women who lost their lives while serving in the military.
MAY IS NATIONAL BBQ AND SALAD MONTH
The sun is shining, the breeze is warming, the birds are chirping, and grills all around Toronto are being lit up for the first barbecue of the season. And there is no better way to spend a beautiful Sunday afternoon in May than by throwing a barbecue for your friends and family to enjoy!
Yup, it’s time to take the covers off your grills and smokers and start cooking outside again.
Eat Sum More’s fine selection of grillable meats – ROAST CHICKENS, FLAT CHICKENS, BEEF BOEREWORS, CHICKEN BOEREWORS & BREAKFAST SAUSAGE BOEREWORS – are lovingly made from our family recipe which has been passed down for generations.
The select spices we use are directly related to the spice route that made its way around the Cape of Africa. My late father, Louis Slimowitz, had a number of butcheries in Klerksdorp and Stillfontein, and he always used to say again and again, “It’s all in the spices!”
We have worked hard and with relentless passion and integrity to raise the bar as we continue to provide you, our clients, with the freshest, sustainable, top-of-the-line, hand cut, traditional South African meat products that you’ve come to love over the years.
NOTE – We do not ship frozen meats; in-store pick-up only.
RECIPE OF THE MONTH – BLACK FOREST CAKE FOR MOM

DARK CHOCOLATE SHARDS:
90g dark chocolate
2 rectangles of baking paper 40 cm x 30 cm
1 cardboard core from an empty roll of kitchen paper or foil
CAKE BATTER:
400g tin pitted black cherries
3 extra large eggs, at room temperature
1 cup (250ml) canola oil
1 cup (250ml) of liquid made up of juice drained from cherries and strong black coffee
1 x 650g Ina Paarman’s Chocolate Cake Mix
FILLING AND TOPPING:
2 cups (500ml) fresh cream
4 tbsp (60ml) dry Ina Paarman’s Lemon Flavour Cheesecake Mix
Cherries, fresh if available or use bottled stemmed cherries
Dark chocolate shards (see above)
DIRECTIONS – DARK CHOCOLATE SHARDS:
Gently melt the chocolate in a small bowl over hot water. Spread the chocolate on one sheet of baking paper leaving a wide border. Lay the second sheet on top. Use a rolling pin to gently level the chocolate between the sheets of baking paper. Don’t roll out too thinly. Roll the paper around the cardboard core and secure with paper clips. Leave to set hard in the fridge until ready to decorate the cake. To garnish: unroll the paper and pull the top sheet straight while unrolling, this will splinter the chocolate on the bottom sheet into slightly rounded shards.
DIRECTIONS – CAKE:
Adjust oven shelf to middle position. Preheat oven to 180°C. Butter 2 x 20cm cake tins generously and line bases with baking paper. Pour the tin of cherries into a sieve and drain well over a bowl. Beat eggs and oil for 1 minute on high speed until well blended. Add cherry juice and black coffee and beat for 1 minute on high speed. Add Chocolate Cake Mix and fold in by hand with a spatula until combined. Scrape mixture into prepared pans. Weigh each pan to make sure you have the same amount of mixture in each. Level the mixture. Bake for 40 minutes. Cake is done when a thin-bladed knife inserted in the centre comes out clean or cake pulls away slightly from the sides of the pan. Cool cakes in the pan for 10 minutes. Turn out on a wire rack. Divide each cake into two layers through the middle (check video for technique).
DIRECTIONS – FILLING:
Half whip the cream and then sprinkle the dry Cheesecake Mix over. Whip cream until just firm. Spread ¼ of the filling over one cake. Place one third of the drained cherries evenly on the cream. Position next cake on top and add cream and cherries, as above, until all four layers have been used. Unroll the paper and pull the top sheet straight while unrolling, this will splinter the chocolate on the bottom sheet into slightly rounded shards. Garnish top with remaining cream, stemmed cherries and chocolate shards. Leave in the fridge to firm for 1 hour before serving. Serve on a cake stand.
